Certificate in Theology

This is a one-year course is offered by St Patrick’s College Maynooth from September which aims to provide a dynamic learning environment for those seeking a comprehensive foundation in Catholic Theology or for those who wish to develop and broaden their Theological knowledge. Participants will gain a more thorough understanding of their lived faith and its application to both parish and public life.

Key areas of study: Sacred Scripture, Social Ethics, Sacramental Theology, Liturgical Theology, Spirituality, Pastoral Theology, Church History.

Lectures will be on Mondays and Wednesdays 6.30-9.30pm, plus two Saturdays in the second semester.

Part-time Courses for Teachers 

Diploma in Catholic Education

This one year course supports and enriches primary and post-primary teacher, both in their own faith and in their role as Catholic Educators.

Lectures: Tuesdays: 6.30-8.30pm; three Saturdays per semester; one-week Summer school at Norte Dame Centre, Kylemore

Other: Three community nights per semester, three weekend retreats throughout the year.


Higher Diploma in Theological Studies

This one year course fulfils the Teaching Council requirements for Religious Education at Post-Primary Level – covers a comprehensive range of theological subjects, and will appeal to people furthering their theological understanding.


Mondays and Wednesdays: 6.30pm – 9.30pm

Four Saturdays (two Saturdays per semester: 10.00am – 4.00pm)

One year taught Masters programmes

– one of which can be studied part time


Mth in Christianity, Human Rights and Society

The one-year taught Masters explores the interface between Christian theological tradition and contemporary society.  Particular attention is given to areas such as Healthcare Ethics, Media, Social Justice and Church-State Relations.

Lectures: Mondays 4.00-6.00pm, Wednesdays 4.00-6.00pm and 7.00-9.00pm.

Mth in the Bible as Scripture

This one-year Masters offers the knowledge and skills for an engagement with the Bible that unlocks its literary and theological depth, as well as its challenge and spiritual power.

Both these courses require applicants to have a B.A. in Theology.

For those without a B.A. in Theology, but with a B.A. in another discipline, there is also the option of completing the Higher Diploma in Theological Studies, which is also run part-time in the evenings as mentioned above.
