The Irish Church Music Association’s Summer School 2018 begins on Wednesday 27th June and ends on Saturday 30th June.
Our theme this year is Faith, Hope and Love.
The guest directors are John Bell, Iona Community, Scotland and Philip Stopford, Composer and Director of Music at Christ Church, Bronxville.
This year we are building up to the historic visit of Pope Francis due to take place this August. Many of those involved in preparing the liturgy and music in parishes around the country will be preparing various events around the World Meeting of Families. On Wednesday 27th June, the Evening Prayer celebrated that evening is the same liturgy which will be celebrated in each cathedral throughout the country on 21st August, to begin this historic event of the World Meeting of Families.
On Friday 29th, Derek Mahady, music co-ordinator for the World Meeting of Families, will conduct a workshop to introduce the music repertoire for the Morning Prayer and the Celebration of the Eucharist in the RDS, as well as at the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park. A special workshop will be led by John Jones, St John’s Church, Tralee and will include a variety of Irish Liturgical Music for inclusion in the liturgy. This workshop coincides with the launch of the new translation of An Leabhar Rómhánach and the launch of Canamís – Ceol don Aifreann – the publication of Irish Mass settings by the Advisory Committee on Church Music. The workshop will include hymns, psalms, acclamations and instrumental airs.
On Saturday morning, Philip Stopford will conduct a special workshop for choir members who can only attend on that day. A separate programme will be prepared for that day.
