Funeral Ministry Teams Training

One of our Building Hope Pastoral objectives for 2025-2027 is to:

Establish a FUNERAL MINISTRY TEAM where one does not currently exist, or seek to expand and develop it where it does, providing at least two trained and commissioned lay funeral ministry leaders within the partnership.

Training for parish Funeral Ministry Teams is available on a deanery/parish partnership level.

This three module training course is for all those currently in parish funeral ministry, as well as those considering this important role.

Module 1 includes:

  • What is Funeral Ministry?
  • Exploring the Order of Christian Funerals
  • Forming a Funeral Team
  • The Art of Accompaniment

Module 2 includes:

  • Diocesan Funeral Ministry Policy Guidelines
  • Liturgies to accompany the Funeral Journey
  • Roles on the Funeral Team

Module 3 includes:

  • Meeting with the Family
  • Planning the Funeral Liturgy
  • Guiding Principles
  • Useful Resources

A certificate of completion is given to those who complete ALL 3 modules.

Funeral Prayer Leaders Training

This training is for those members of Funeral teams who will lead times of prayer before a Funeral, lead Funeral Services and the Rite of Committal at the grave or crematorium.

It is a follow on course from the Funeral Ministry Teams training and runs over 3 modules.  A certificate of completion is available to those who complete ALL 3 modules.

Funeral Prayer Leaders can then be commissioned for service in the parish using the following rite:

The training consists of:

Module 1 includes:

  • Communal Prayer
  • Role of Leader
  • Leading Communal Prayer

Module 2 includes:

  • Prayers after Death
  • Gathering in Presence of the Body
  • Vigil
  • Transfer to Church
  • Rite of Committal

Module 3 includes:

  • Christian Symbols
  • Funeral Liturgy outside Mass

Training for Ministers of the Word

Training is available to parish partnerships and Deaneries for new Ministers of the Word and as renewal for existing ministers.

This 2 hour input explores the areas of the Word of God and Ministry and includes a guide to Best Practice for parishes.

Voluntary Ministry Matters

A Guidebook for Parish Pastoral Councils

This new resource has been designed as a guide to develop and grow voluntary ministry in parish.  Offering insights into ministry, participation and co-responsibility, this guidebook will help PPCs to identify areas and ways to engage the giftedness of parishioners in ministry.  It includes resources and ideas specially created to explore the attitudes and approach to parish ministry and make the process of recruitment more successful.
