Churches at heart of Dublin invite baptised back this Lent

Were you baptised in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral or St Andrew’s, Westland Row?

Tens of thousands of people were baptised as infants in both ‘The Pro’ (as it was) and in Westland Row over the years, having been born in the Rotunda and Holles Street hospitals. It was the practice in years past for babies to be baptised soon after birth.

People from all over the country and indeed from abroad regularly call into both churches to see where they were baptised as babies. This year, St Mary’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s, Westland Row, are collaborating in an initiative to encourage people to come back to see where they were baptised, to reflect on their baptism and their lives since, and to take a moment to reconnect with their spiritual roots.

Both churches are open every day and welcome visitors to take a moment to reflect and to pray. During Lent this year they are inviting those who baptised to come back to see the baptismal font in which they were christened and receive a special souvenir prayer card. There’s a special invitation to come into St Mary’s and St Andrew’s on each Saturday in March at 12 noon, when there will be a special celebration with an opportunity for prayer and to receive a blessing.

This initiative comes as the Church in Ireland is reflecting during Lent on the importance of Baptism as the foundation for a Christian life and for renewal as a Synodal Church.

Remembering my Baptism

Loving God, in this holy season of Lent we prepare to celebrate the great feast of Easter when the wonder of your love was revealed in the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ your son when he passed from death to new life.

I recall the day of my Baptism, when your new life rained on me and I was anointed as your child, chosen, called and sent by the power of your Spirit as a witness to your love in my time and place.

I give thanks for the font at which I was baptised and for all those who opened my eyes, mind and heart to mystery of your love as i grew from child to adult in Christ.

On my journey to Easter, I recall my Baptism and pray for the strength of your Holy Spirit to respond more fully to your call to be a font of life in Christ for others, a light proclaiming the Gospel by my life, drawing them to Jesus and to the family of the Church.

Amen
