This Lent, experience an afternoon of beautiful sacred music at St Mary’s Cathedral.
The Palestrina Choir and the St Mary’s Cathedral Girls’ Choir are joined by members of Marlborough Baroque for a deeply moving programme of music for the Lenten season.
At the heart of the concert is the hauntingly beautiful Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi – a masterpiece of tenderness and pathos that contemplates the sorrow of Mary at the foot of the Cross. Its poignant melodies and luminous duets have made it one of the most beloved sacred works of the Baroque era.
The programme also features the intensely expressive Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti, a work of extraordinary harmonic depth and emotional gravity.
From the English sacred tradition comes the searing anthem Hear My Prayer, O Lord by Henry Purcell, whose rising lines and suspensions culminate in a moment of breathtaking intensity.
Adding to the atmosphere of contemplation is O Vos Omnes by Pablo Casals – a deeply personal meditation on the suffering of Christ – alongside the powerful penitential writing of Miserere in C Minor by Alessandro Scarlatti.
Instrumental colour is provided by members of Marlborough Baroque in Sonata RV 130 by Antonio Vivaldi, offering moments of luminous contrast and expressive lyricism within this meditative journey.
Together, these masterworks trace the emotional landscape of Lent – sorrow, supplication, reflection, and ultimately hope – performed by some of the region’s finest choral and Baroque musicians.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of sacred music in the heart of the city.
Sunday, March 15, from 3:30pm to 5pm
