Avoca

Parish Information

Parish History

The present parish combines pre-Reformation parishes of Castlemacadam, Ballidonnell (now Redcross), Ennereilly, Ballintemple, Kilmacoo, Kilpatrick, Templemichael, Kilbride and Templerainey.

Our earliest register (1777) refers to the ‘Parish of Redcross’.  When the present parish church in Avoca was opened in 1862, Avoca had become the principal centre.  The village now called Avoca was called ‘Newbridge’ until the late 1800s.
